Don Adams played the bumbling agent 86 (Maxwell Smart) in the hilarious sitcom “Get Smart” which ran from 1965-1970. A creature of the spy craze of the 60s (thanks to James Bond), Smart always outwitted the bad guys at KAOS and came out on top–despite being a bit clueless. Aided by his partner, the sophisticated agent 99 (Barbara Feldon) Max always triumped in spite of his many shortcomings.
Adams played Smart to a T, and with Edward Platt as his beleaguered chief (and straight man) these two and Feldon created comic moments that will never be reproduced. The writing of the Show (created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry) was masterful and memorable. Who can forget the running gag of the “Cone of Silence?” Every time this faulty, unweildly contraption descended over Max and the Chief, the Chief’s eyes would almost fill with tears. They got a lot of mileage out of that gag–and the gag worked EVERY time.
Tag lines like “Sorry about that, Chief!” and “Missed it by that much!” became ubiquitous catch phrases everyone used (and many still do). Smart’s shoe phone was a running gag throughout the series and now we too have phones to carry on our persons. How the times have changed.
From sight gags and physical comedy to great one-liners, this show hit all the right marks. Too bad we don’t have shows like this today.
The painting measures 16 inches by 20 inches and is painted in oil. This one-of-a-kind, original artwork will ship UNFRAMED. This portrait of Don Adams as Maxwell Smart from “Get Smart.” Smart is tailing suspicious characters while reading a newspaper and is making a call to the Chief on his shoe phone. If you’re a Get Smart fan, owning an original portrait of Don Adams would be the “Smart” thing to do!
