Wild Wild West (Robert Conrad/Ross Martin) Screen Print 9×12″

The Wild Wild West was a truly unique show. At a time when both the spy craze as well as Westerns were popular, the show combined both. James West (played by Robert Conrad) was an 1870s version of James Bond who made use of high-tech (for the era) gadgetry while fighting the bad guys. Partner Artemus Gordon (played by Ross Martin) was a master of disguise and usually donned a fake nose, moustache and wig in each episode. Like Bond’s nemesis Blofeld, West and Gordon often tangled with the diminutive and evil Dr. Miguelito Loveless, played to perfection by Michael Dunn.

The episodes ran from action to mystery to sci-fi and we watched and waited to see what gadget West would use to get out of some scrape or other or who Artemus Gordon would pretend to be under all that makeup.

The two actors really were what you saw on screen: one a rough-hewn, macho fighter (Conrad was a boxer) and a sophisticated man of the world (Martin was an accomplished classical actor. And the chemistry of the two was real. Off screen they were good friends who introduced each other to their favorite pursuits. Conrad introduced Martin to sporting events while Martin would take Conrad to the opera or some other highbrow activity.

It’s currently on FETV so new audiences can discover this great show and become new legions of fans.

I chose to portray West and Gordon sharing a laugh because the heart of the show was the real camaraderie between the two men which made each episode work so well.
