Liberace (1919-1987), had a career that spanned decades. Known as a consummate pianist, flamboyant style of dress (later imitated by Elton John) and signature candelabras, Liberace entertained audiences in film, television and on stage. He was one of the highest paid entertainers in Las Vegas for years. Fans of the Batman series with Adam West will recall his guest appearance on the show as the concert pianist Chandell.
As a fan of Andy Warhol, I had him in mind when creating this image of Liberace. Set on a field of purple, Liberace’s hands and face are highlighted in golden yellow rectilinear shapes. Liberace’s body is rendered in black ink.
The original, limited edition screen print measures 11 inches by 17 inches, ink on the cardboard that was part of the watercolor paper pad. I used it for a one-off, slightly different variation of the print. Instead of golden yellow for the face and hands, I let the cardboard surface show through. This original artwork will ship unframed. For lovers of classic TV, music or just plain kitsch, having this print on your wall will be a unique conversation piece.
This is one in a series of 30 prints, but this version is unique. Note that the print may contain minor variations and/or slight imperfections inherent in the screen printing process.
