The Sarge

Vic Morrow is best remembered by fans as Sgt. “Chip” Saunders from the series “Combat!” which ran from 1962-1967. Morrow was active in films beginning in 1955’s Blackboard Jungle. In 1962, however, he became the face of one of the best-loved World War II-themed television shows, “Combat!,” which followed the dogged sergeant and his squad as they fought their way from the Beaches of Normandy through occupied France. Rick Jason also starred as Lieutenant Gil Hanley, Saunders’ superior. They would alternate as leads in the series, each taking the helm of the squad for whatever mission they faced, or, in certain episodes the focus would be on each character alone. Sadly, Morrow was killed in an accident while filming the movie version of “The Twilight Zone” in 1982.

Morrow was also an accomplished director with several “Combat!” episodes to his credit including the 2-parter “Hills Are For Heroes” which could stand alone as its own feature film.
